The Swingin' Ladies of the US Open Golf Tourney

Our lesbian sports guru Helen Wortham fantasizes about Robin Roberts giving her private lessons at the US Women's Golf Open, meanwhile Lorena Ochoa, Ji Yai Shin, Cristie Kerr and Paula Creamer will vie for the title.

The US Women’s Golf Open starts Thursday and I’m already messed up. This problem began when I glanced at the website and was totally psyched to see newscaster Robin Roberts showing up to do a golf clinic on Wednesday. I love her. I spent the rest of the day thinking of what it would be like for her to stand close behind me, arms wrapped around, helping me with my swing. Did I mention I love her?

I was obviously too wrapped up in the fantasy of the moment to realize that my GMA superstar was there for pre-tourney festivities and someone else drew the short straw to help hack golfers like me. The only way to see her play golf is video of her challenging Tiger Woods to Xbox PGA Tour 10 in the GMA studio…but I still love her.

One thing that isn’t messed up is the weather. It’s sunny in Bethlehem, Pa. right now, and that means there won’t be a repeat of the mudfest they had for the Men’s Open. This is a first for the Saucon Valley Course to host this championship and it measures a whopping 6740 yards, which makes it one of the longest in Women’s Tournament history. There’s a long creek that runs through the course and this will also be an accuracy factor.

Right now the tournament favorite is Lorena Ochoa, who has yet to win a US Open. She hasn’t been her sharpest on recent starts and will have to be very accurate off the tee on this course.

Rookie Ji Yai Shin leads the money list in 2009 and although she’s not a long hitter, she is very accurate from the tee.

Cristie Kerr won the Open back in 2007 and has eight top ten places this season. She is in a good place mentally for this tournament.

Monday Paula Creamer threw out the 1st pitch at a Phillies game, but her hand injury is still a problem for her golf. She’s withdrawn from the past two events and it is still an issue for the Open.

Let’s keep a keen eye on the ladies – I mean the ball – at the Open.
