Fresh off the confirmation that Lukas Gage is dating celebrity hairstylist Chris Appleton, the actor has now taken some time to comment on other recent LGBTQ+ news.

On Tuesday, March 14, DJ and music producer Diplo came out as being “not not gay,” going on to reveal that he has gotten oral from men in the past. This headline-making announcement has been widely embraced by many people in the LGBTQ+ community – including celebrities.

In a new interview with Variety, Gage was asked to comment on Diplo’s recent coming-out. Having struggled with the media coverage surrounding his own sexuality, the actor definitely had a few personal thoughts to share.

“I’m sure there are a lot of people who have that same exact experience but maybe don’t have the confidence or the honesty to talk about it like that,” Gage said in the interview. “And, you know, there’s going to be people on either side saying that he’s not labeling himself enough. I commend him on his honesty and I don’t think we need to label everything and have it all figured out. Things can be in a gray area and don’t have to be so black and white.”

Gage also touched on the subject of on-screen LGBTQ+ representation and what role he plays within it. “At the end of the day, you hope that the stories do more than just entertain,” the actor explained. “Maybe it’s just being entertaining for the sake of being entertaining, or maybe it’s an escape from whatever hard time they’re having in their life, but to be seen in these characters, to feel like you can connect and like somebody else gets it – I’m not alone out there – that at the end of the day is the greatest gift that I can have in this job.”

In fact, Gage considers getting that kind of response as “the greatest compliment that I can get on anything that I’m playing.”

The actor is currently promoting Down Low, a brand-new movie that he cowrote with Phoebe Fisher and stars in alongside Zachary Quinto. The film just had its world premiere at the SXSW Festival and is getting great reviews.

We stan Gage, Diplo, and everyone else who’s still on a journey to figure out their own sexual identities – with or without labels!
