From its conservative values to its religious roots, country music boasts a stigma bigger than Dolly’s boob job. And in a world where being a country music fan is scoffed at enough – imagine being a country music fan who also happens to be gay!
Here are 14 struggles every gay country music fan has definitely encountered.
1. When you’re asked who the queen of pop is – and you’re response is always Carrie Underwood.
2. Only to be meant with skepticism - so you have to show them her receipts.
3. Your friends never allowing you to control the music – especially at a pregame.
4. Never having a bar to go to that plays your jams.
5. Or worse, requesting a song and being laughed at by the DJ.
6. Feeling like you’re too country for a trendy club but too gay for a country bar.
7. “Country music all sounds the same.”
8. Being the only person in your friend group who wants to go to that one concert or music festival.
9. Then arriving at said music festival only to be met with judgement from its attendees.
10. Dreading having to answer “What kind of music do you listen to?”
11. …and feeling like you’re coming out for the second time when you say “I listen to country.”
12. Watching your faves cross over to pop music – but supporting them anyways because you just want them to be happy.
13. When people try to discredit your country queen or king’s success because “country fans buy albums.”
14. Finally, when people assume all country music artists don’t support the gays.False.
