A lesbian couple in Parker, Colo., says they have been the victims of a hate crime — at their home.
On Friday, Aimee Whitchurch (pictured left) and Christel Conklin (pictured right) went out to their garage in the condo complex where they live and found the message “kill the gay” spray-painted on the door. The next day, they found a noose on their doorstep.
“You get words like ‘homos’ or ‘you’re going to burn in hell’ and things of that nature, but ‘kill the gay?’ That’s a threat against our lives so it was overwhelming,” Whitchurch told local KWGN 2. “The noose is where it really became shocking and scary.”
While the couple admitted they’ve been feuding with their homeowners association, who claim the women don’t pick up after their dog, they say they will not be bullied out of their home. When the H.O.A. painted over the antigay message on their garage door, Whitchurch and Conklin put up signs that read “We will not submit to hate” and “Don’t cover it, solve it.”
The Parker police department is investigating the case and as a result have increased patrols in the area.
