Truly, who hasn't found themselves thinking, 'You know what the Star Wars universe needs more of? Lesbians." We know we have, and our hopes and dreams are about to come true. Those who have been following the Star Wars novels (and it's never too late to start!) are about to meet Moff Mars, a new character described as, "an Imperial who has made some very serious mistakes but she is an incredibly capable leader and spends much of the book working hard to prevent absolute failure." Now, for a series that has been around for decades, it's pretty surprising it took this long to finally introduce some intergalatic LGBT characters.
Editor Shelly Shapiro spoke on the significance of this, explaining, "“This is certainly the first character in canon. But there was a gay Mandalorian couple, so it’s not brand new. You have all these different species and it would be silly to not also recognize that there’s a lot of diversity in humans. If there’s any message at all, it’s simply that Star Wars is as diverse (or more so because they have alien species) as humanity is in real life and we don’t want to pretend it’s not. It just felt perfectly natural.”
We can't wait to meet Moff Mars in the newest novel Lords of the Sith, out on April 28th. Here's hoping for many more LGBT characters in the future! Well, we guess we mean a long, long time ago. In a galaxy far, far away...
