Chains, lace, and leather. Oh my!
Glam-rock band DEITRE is back with another boundary-pushing new music video. "Jesse," directed by Olaa Olabi, explores sexuality and gender-bending as frontman Richie Bee begs Jesse to stay. One scene shows Bee chained to wall in women's lingerie and head covered, another with him dancing to impress in sensual choreography and a leather harness and stilettos.
"The most important thing for me as an artist is to stay true to who I am as a queer man," says Bee. "As a society, I think that we put a lot of pressure on men being masculine and women being feminine, and what I wanted to say with this music video is that there are no rules."
But the video, ultimately, became a self-love anthem.
"I wrote the song a year ago, but it wasn't until we shot the music video that I really understood what this song was trying to tell me which is that "Jesse" is (and always was) ME. We live in a society where we are brainwashed to believe in gender roles. "Jesse" is the suppressed gender. "Jesse" is your masculine/feminine side begging to come out. It's represented in the opening scene where I have my masculine self walking into a cellar to find my feminine self chained up to a wall."
