Although things can always get worse, Boston’s Straight Pride Parade went about as terribly as expected this weekend.

It’s estimated that several hundred straight pride celebrants and over a thousand protestors attended the march, where floats included a giant ode to Trump with a “Build the Wall” sign. You know, totally necessary for a “straight pride” event and definitely nothing to do with white supremacy whatsoever.

But it’s no surprise hate had a strong presence among the few people there to actually attend the event rather than protest it. The organizers of the event, Super Happy Fun America, have strong ties with white supremacist and alt-right groups, including Resist Marxism and the Proud Boys.

As such, cops were out in full force during the parade, hypothetically to de-escalate any incidences of violence between the marchers and the protestors. Thirty-six arrests were made during the event, though it’s not yet clear how many were from each group, and four officers were injured.

People in attendance said that fights were breaking out all over the place, and chants escalated to jeers more often than not.

Despite the low turn out and clashes with protestors, SHFA insists they want to make this a yearly event. Considering how their preferred sponsors and spokespeople turned them down left and right, hopefully their idiotic ideas will eventually fizzle out and die.

While the city had no way of putting a stop to the event, Boston’s mayor spoke out against it on Twitter yesterday morning:

“A ‘Straight Pride’ Parade won’t overshadow the tremendous role Boston plays in the national movement for equality,” he wrote. “We will continue to be a leader in the fight for civil rights. Let’s continue to turn our backs on hatred, using our voices to continue spreading the message of love.”
