Half of the country said they could support an openly gay president of the United States, a new poll found Monday.

The 60 Minutes/Vanity Fair poll revealed that support for equality is on the rise. 50% of respondents said they would support an openly gay or lesbian person to serve as president. 44% were opposed.

The question was posed in connection to the military's plans to do away with "don't ask, don't tell."

The poll also revealed that 55 percent of Americans would support a gay Supreme Court justice and 56 percent for Secretary of State.

Support increased on the sporting scene as 61 percent said they'd back a gay commissioner of baseball, and 62 percent said they would support an openly gay quarterback in the Super Bowl.

The poll was conducted Feb. 26-March 1 and has a 3 percent margin of error.
