According to a recent poll conducted by the Washington Post, support of same-sex marriage in Maryland may be increasing, with registered voters now narrowly supporting a law to allow it.
The poll, conducted by the Post May 3-6, found that 46 percent favor legal same-sex marriage. However, it was a slim majority as 44 percent oppose such a law with 10 percent having no opinion. Among registered voters, 48 percent are in favor with 43 percent opposed.
An identical Post poll conducted in late 2007 found 44 percent in favor overall with 51 percent opposed.
In the 2010 poll, 55 percent of the voters said that if gay residents were to get married in other states, those unions should be considered legal in Maryland. 38 percent oppose such recognition.
In February, the Maryland Attorney General issued an order for state agencies to begin granting married same-sex couples from elsewhere the same rights as Maryland's heterosexual couples.
After this order, Douglas F. Gansler faced an unsuccessful impeachment attempt proposed by conservative state delegate, Anne Arundel.
