Iowans Have Bigger Problems to Solve than Gay Marriage: Repeal Unlikely

With the country in the midst of an economic recession coupled with the debate over healthcare, gay marriage is not on the minds of the Iowa lawmakers.

On the one year anniversary of the Supreme Court's ruling to legalize same sex marriage, the fight to overturn seems to be too much of a liability.  Iowans are moving on.

Immediately after the ruling, GOP lawmakers tried numerous times to force a vote. So far this year, the issue has come up once, but after receiving minimal support, attention returned to the state's budget.

A September Des Moines Register Iowa Poll found Iowans almost evenly divided about whether they would vote for or against a constitutional amendment to end same-sex marriage, with 41 percent supporting a ban and 40 percent opposing. And while 43 percent say they oppose the Supreme Court's ruling, a whopping 63 percent say other issues are more important going into the fall election.

The Iowa Independent is reporting that nearly 92% of people polled say gay marriage has brought no real change to their lives and 62% said that lawmakers have more important things to worry about than same sex marriage.
