The next leader of the Scottish Conservative Party may be a lesbian, and the first openly gay candidate to run for a leadership position in the party, Pink News U.K. reports.
Scottish Parliament Member Ruth Davidson, a 32-year-old former BBC journalist, launched her campaign in Edinburgh last week. She would become the first openly gay leader of a mainstream political party in the U.K.
"Real change will come when the party unites behind a dynamic, modern leader," she said according to the report. "I will be that leader."
Another contender to lead the party, MSP Murdo Fraser, has said that if he wins, he will split the Conservative Party to create another party that follows a more heavily right-wing platform.
