"If you feel strongly about the all-male SPOTY list, it might be worth making the point to the sports editor of the paper you read, the radio station you listen to, the TV stations you watch, that their coverage of female sport is very, very limited in non-Olympic years," Balding said according to Pink News. Balding, an out lesbian who is also recovering from a bout with thyroid cancer, also said female and male viewers should be demanding more coverage of women athletes.
According to fellow television personality Gabby Logan, who also shared her outrage over women being left out of the prestigious list, the last time a female athlete was put on the list was in 2006. Zara Phillips, who happens to be 13th in the line of succession to the throne, is a champion equestrian.
