Marvel Studios is riding high of its slate of Iron Man hits, but there’s been a shakeup in the pre-production for the sequel to the successful Thor movie. Muscle man Chris Hemsworth is due to return in the title role with the radiant recent Oscar winner and mom, Natalie Portman, as his costar. But The Hollywood Reporter writes Jenkins as director has been dropped. And Portman is none too pleased to be without the Monster director.
According to THR.com’s sources, “Jenkins was fired without warning from a job that would have made her the first woman to direct a superhero tentpole.” This all came as shocking news to Portman, who has championed the female director for Thor’s follow up.
Portman is contractually obligated to return in the sequel, but THR reports Marvel is working hard to calm their leading ladies concerns and actively engaging her in discussions of potential replacements.
But, perhaps Jenkins was not a right fit for the project after all. One of Hollywood Reporter’s sources revealed, “Marvel had certain things they needed to achieve” with the movie and that created “constraints on what [Jenkins] could do creatively.”
