Television is a tough business these days with shows getting axed after just a few episodes. While the CW’s Mamie Gummer starrer Emily Owens, M.D. has gotten more air-time than NBC’s ill-fated The Playboy Club –which was axed after only three episodes—the show, that features Kelly McCreary as a lesbian doctor, has now been officially canceled but will air the full 13-episode season, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Gummer, who’s a terrific actress –no big surprise considering her mom is Meryl Streep—can’t seem to catch a break when it comes to starring in a series. The actress memorably went toe-to-toe with Julianna Margulies’ Alicia Florrick on in a recurring role on The Good Wife as an outwardly naïve but ultimately savvy attorney. But, even golden girl showrunner Shonda Rhimes (Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, Scandal) couldn’t make Off the Map, a doctors doing good in the wild series that costarred Gummer, work.
While Gummer appeared perfect for the titular role of the neurotic and nerdy Emily on the CW’s ill-fated show, audiences failed to its Popular meetsGrey’s Anatomy vibe, although, personally, I rather enjoyed the quirky little show.
Here’s hoping the remaining episodes offer McCreary’s lesbian character Tyra time to deal with her demons coming out to her father and perhaps even – gasp – date someone!
