On the heels of an impressive opening weekend at the box office (in limited release), Carol, starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara as a ‘50s-era suburban socialite and a shop girl who engage in a love affair, the film has nabbed six Independent Spirit Award nominations, according to The Wrap.

Released in Los Angeles and New York on Friday, Carol crushed the Specialty Box Office pulling in the “third biggest opening of 2015 per theater average,” Deadline reported.

Then, the Independent Spirit Award noms came out today and the film earned nominations for its stars Blanchett and Mara for female lead, Todd Haynes for director, Phyllis Nagy for her screenplay, for best feature, and for cinematography.

Blanchett and Mara are up against Kitana Kiki Rodriguez for the trans-themed Tangerine, Brie Larson for Room, and Bel Powley for The Diary of a Teenage Girl.

Also of note to LGBT audiences, in the best supporting lead category are Cynthia Nixon for James White and Mya Taylor for Tangerine.
