The best thing to do if Mike Pence shows up at your graduation? Get the hell out.
And that’s exactly what dozens of students and faculty at Taylor University did this past weekend, where Pence was giving the commencement speech for their graduating class.
Taylor University is a small Christian liberal arts college in Pence's home state of Indiana — there are around 2000 enrolled students in total, with a graduating class of 494.
The decision to include Pence in the ceremony had been heavily debated within the university, and many throughout the student body and faculty didn’t think it was appropriate for the school to invite a speaker who is so well-known for his far right and anti-LGBTQ views.
“I think his presence makes it difficult for everyone at Taylor to feel welcomed,” graduating senior Laura Rathburn said.
Despite the school being religiously affiliated, some were quick to point out that Christianity and conservative views don’t necessarily go hand in hand for everyone.
“For me personally, I think we should identify as Christians first before we have political ties,” said another student, Katie Tupper.
For his part, Pence used the platform he was given to influence and inspire young minds to bemoan how difficult it is to be a Christian in the modern world.
“Lately, it’s become acceptable, even fashionable, to malign traditional Christian beliefs,” he complained. “So as you prepare to leave this place and build your life on a Christ-centered, world-engaging foundation poured here at Taylor University, be prepared to stand up.”
Hopefully, most of that standing up will be in defense of people oppressed by the likes of Mike Pence.
