If you’re unfamiliar, the popular gay-themed romance prominently features surfing. You know, the sport involving a long, hard board and a lot of waves. Unless you happen to live on the coast (or are an avid surfing fan), chances are, you don’t know much about surfing (other than the aforementioned board and waves).

To help celebrate Shelter streaming free on the Here TV App this week, we thought we’d help prepare you for a viewing by ramping you up on some surfing lingo. Few sports are as steeped in jargon and shorthand as surfing, so to help explain some of the best terms in the sport, we’ve compiled this handy guide.

1. Barney
Definition: “An inexperienced surfer, or someone who's no good at surfing.”
How to use it in a sentence: “OMG, I can’t even get up on this thing. I’m such a Barney.”
How we would’ve used it in a sentence: “OMG, her dress is one raunchy shade of Barney.”

2. Chinese Wax Job
Definition: “Getting wax on the bottom of your surfboard.”
How to use it in a sentence: “When was the last time your board got a Chinese wax job?”
How we would’ve used it in a sentence: “When was the last time your boyfriend got a Chinese wax job?”

3. Dirty Licking
Definition: “Taking a gnarly wipeout.”
How to use it in a sentence: “Ooo, ouch! That guy really took a dirty licking!”
How we would’ve used it in a sentence: “Ooo, look at that guy! I’d do a dirty licking on that.”

4. Fakie
Definition: “This is where someone rides backwards on the surfboard, tail first.”
How to use it in a sentence: “Hey, watch this, I’m going to totally do a fakie next!”
How we would’ve used it in a sentence: “Gurl, that’s not a real Louis. Fakie!”

5. Spit
Definition: “Where spray blows out of the end of a barrel (a hollow wave when breaking).”
How to use it in a sentence: “That barrel spit like an angry dragon!”
How we would’ve used it in a sentence: “It was a little rough, he just used his spit.”

6. Washing Machine
Definition: “Getting spun around and around underwater by a wave.”
How to use it in a sentence: “That last wave caught him up in the washing machine!”

7. Sucking Dry
Definition: “Where breaking waves cause all the water to be drawn off the seabed, leaving it exposed.”
How to use it in a sentence: “These waves are really sucking dry!”
How we would’ve used it in a sentence: “Look at this guy I’m meeting up with later — I’m absolutely sucking dry tonight.”
