Twitter: SheWired's Top 10 to Follow

Here are 10 must-follows on Twitter that will keep you up to date on the latest developments in our bid for equality as well as entertain you in 140-characters or less!

While Facebook is great for connecting with friends, Twitter can also serve as a great way to follow the antics of your favorite celebrities as well as news and entertainment of note for the LGBT community. Here are 10 must-follows on Twitter that will keep you up to date on the latest developments in our bid for equality as well as entertain you.

10. No H8 Campaign (@NOH8Campaign). Created in the days after voters approved California’s Proposition 8 in November 2008, the No H8 campaign quickly became the literal face for equality as everyone from Deepak Chopra and Gloria Allred to Kathy Griffin and more have posed to be photographed by Adam Bouska as the nonprofit collects donations to educate the need for equality through the silent protest/photo project. Posts include upcoming photo shoots as well as news updates about gay rights legislation nationwide.

9. Kathy Griffin (@OfficialKathyG). Who knew that shameless self-promotion could be so funny? Griffin plugs her book, Bravo shows, CDs, DVDs and more — in addition to coming up with perverted names for Twitter functions: the comedian dubs Twitpic “Twatpic,” to give you a taste (pardon the pun). These posts sound so much like her that it really must be her posting.

8. Lilith Fair/Sarah McLachlan (@LilithFair, @SarahMcLachlan). Both very new to Twitter, Lilith Fair thus far has posted facts about the 2010 concert about the charities that will benefit from ticket sales as well as the latest news about the festival whose return has been in the works for almost 10 years. Sarah’s post so far have provided photos from recent shows and links to free music downloads.

7. The Indigo Girls(@IndigoGirls2009). Mostly handy links to Indigo Girls concert tickets, videos, press and more, Emily posts news and updates — as well as commentary like her reaction to the Maine vote — but it’s still worth the follow as their updates illustrate how much they care about fans like one recent post from Emily that read, “Amy and I are pouring through live recorded tracks. You guys are the best!”

6. Human Rights Campaign (@HRCBackStory). Links, news, reaction, words of encouragement, all this and more from the nation’s largest civil-rights organization working for LGBT equality. Whether it’s video from D.C. clergy supporting marriage equality or the latest studies showing the similarities between same-sex and opposite-sex couples, this is a great resource delivered right to your Twitter feed.

5. Tegan and Sara (@theteganandsara). The talented twins post everything from being nervous about getting a haircut to links to blog posts, videos from their shows, messages to go out and vote as well as ticket on-sale dates. The singing duo even recently posted news about a last-minute ticket release to a sold-out show in New York. How’s that for up-to-the-minute news?

4. Rachel Maddow (@maddow). The out lesbian and MSNBC host with the most posts her thoughts on everything from who would win in the battle of baby sea turtles vs. John McCain as well as links post-show video. The political babe is just as smart and witty on Twitter as she is on cable.

3. “Glee’s” Sue Sylvester (@S_SylvesterGLEE). No, it’s not Jane Lynch, actually, we have no idea who is writing it. But one thing is for sure, they’re hilarious in that they capture the complete madness that is “Glee’s” Coach Sylvester. A sample: “Sylvester/Palin 2012.” Really? Really. And another: “Health insurance is for the weak. I perform all my own medical procedures.” But wait, there’s more: “Sue Sylvester just walked past a mirror and briefly fell in love with herself. Gotta look into this cloning thing.”

2. Ellen DeGeneres (@TheEllenShow). Links to exclusive clips from “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” as well as behind the scenes clips — like a recent one of Ellen heading off to meet Oprah Winfrey — as well as special guests and sneak previews from the show, the updates are just as witty as our favorite talk-show host is.

1. Queer Unity (@QueerUnity). Queer Unity provides helpful links and updates from the activist blog Queers United. The best resource for protest updates, the latest press on political movements as well as links to debates on the death of queer culture and more, Queer Unity is one of the best resources on Twitter.
