The Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea may be over, but that doesn’t mean tweets from Olympian Gus Kenworthy are. Over the weekend, the openly gay freeskier had a number of heartwarming (and shady) things to say on Twitter.
The first series of tweets had to to with the dog farms in Korea, where hundreds of thousands of dogs are raised for food consumption in deplorable living conditions.
Kenworthy and his BF Matthew Wilkas actually adopted one of the dogs from a dog farm that was closing down. (They named the little guy Beemo.)
Twitter users pointed out the hypocrisy of caring for dogs as opposed to the living conditions of other animals raised for food consumption, like pigs, cows, and chickens. God knows that there are many animals raised in the U.S. for food consumption that face equally-deplorable conditions. So to some, Kenworthy's singling out of an Asian country, when there are so many issues with the meat industry at home in the States, felt a little biased.
Kenworthy though, defended his stance, explaining that he wants all living conditions of animals to be better. He also tweeted, "Just b/c 10 things are wrong doesn't mean working to solve 1 issue is bad b/c it leaves 9 other problems. It's still positive change," and an apology for not pointing out that most Koreans are actually opposed to the cruelty dogs in dog farms face.
Then yesterday, Kenworthy tweeted about the closing Olympic ceremony, throwing a little shade at the United States president’s daughter, who was in attendance.
Lastly, he tweeted a playful jab regarding his newfound friendship with Adam Rippon, another openly gay United States Olympian who’s been outspoken against Mike Pence and the rest of the Trump administration these Olympic games.
Gus, all we can say is keep tweeting. Keep fighting for causes you’re passionate about, keep being shady towards bigots, and keep being friends with America’s gay sweetheart, Adam Rippon.
