Is this the last we’ve seen of Alex and Henry’s epic love story?

Red, White & Royal Blue is currently Prime Video’s number one film, which feels very correct.

When a film is successful and captures the zeitgeist, that typically means there’s a good chance that the powers that be in Hollywood are keen to repeat that success with a sequel. Naturally, fans are wondering if that’s true for the immediately beloved rom-com.

For those unfamiliar, Red, White & Royal Blue is based on the novel by Casey McQuiston and follows the rivalry turned grudging respect turned passionate and forbidden romance of the U.S. President’s son Alex (Taylor Zakhar Perez) and the British Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine). The movie earned critical praise (and some criticism) and an instant fan base for its leads’ chemistry and the sheer queer joy of watching them fall in love.

While the film leaves the couple in a good place, fans would love to see the next chapter in this romance — as would director Matthew Lopez, who told Gay Times that he’s already pitched an idea for a follow-up.

“Here’s what I’ll say: if people like the movie, if it’s successful and people want more, who am I to deny them?” he told the publication, adding that this shouldn’t be taken as a guarantee that we’ll see a sequel. “Not confirmed! That’s not confirmation. Look, any movie that ever simply gets made is a miracle. It’s greedy for a filmmaker two weeks before his movie comes out to start talking about a sequel.”

“People loved the book so much they wanted the movie, right? I should be so lucky that people love the movie so much that they want another one,” he added.

The sequel talk reportedly began on set even before the film was finished. “Everyone in the hair and makeup department” shared their ideas for a second film with everything from “Red, White & Royal Wedding” to “Red, White & Royal Baby“ being suggested, Lopez said. “I was like, ‘Can we just get through today first, please?’”

The director also opened up about how careful he was in the casting for his two leads, but once they began interacting he knew instantly he had made the right choice. “Nick was Henry and Taylor was Alex, but were they going to be great together as Henry and Alex? We put them on a Zoom together and to my great relief, the chemistry was there. We knew we had a movie five minutes in because their chemistry was undeniable,” he recalled.

Undeniable indeed. For what it’s worth, we’d like to officially pitch Red, White & Royal Blue: A Royal Honeymoon for, um, reasons.
